This autumn Whitewater Contemporary present a limited collection of ten new ceramic works by potter Hugh West.
This elegant group of works is inspired by the beautiful colours of the Cornish coastline, from the dazzling blue of seawater pools on white sand, to the shifting pinks and creams of fine shell sand. Each piece is hand thrown on the wheel in fine quality English porcelain. As a skilled Master potter, Hugh has pushed his material to its limits in terms of scale and refinement of form and has detailed the collection with concentric circles on the outside of each bowl to emulate the texture of rippling sands at low tide.
Hugh West studied at Hereford School of Art & Design, later studying ceramics at Redruth School of Art. He established his own studio in Cornwall in 1971, and later a large production pottery in Devon, before relocating to La Borne in France, where an ancient pottery village still survives. Hugh is now based in Cornwall and is iapproaching his 54th year as a professional craftsman. He has held numerous solo exhibitions in the UK, and has exhibited in group shows in Europe, Japan, Saudi Arabia, South Korea and the United States.
