Suki Wapshott: Featured Artist

27 April - 29 May 2024

Whitewater Gallery's Featured Artist for May 2024 is much loved painter Suki Wapshott, known for her paintings of Cornwall's wild Atlantic coast.

Whilst landscape inspires her work, Suki's focus as an artist has always been on emotive expression, achieved through freedom of process and her instinctive use of colour and structure. This new collection is inspired by ideas of solitude and solace, of peaceful time spent walking the beaches and cliff paths around Polzeath and the Camel Estuary in the early morning, with only the sea mist and sunrise for company. Working with a palette knife and brush, Suki creates richly textured imagery and powerful compositions, with low set or dramatically high horizons that convey the awe-inspiring grandeur of the space where land meets sea, lit by the hazy Cornish sunshine which radiates through layers of rain and cloud. Looking out across sands at low tide and taking in spectacular views of Pentire and Stepper Point, these paintings capture the blue tinted light of Cornwall's ever shifting skies, reflected on wet beaches and rolling ocean waters.

Suki Wapshott has lived and worked on the North Cornwall coast for more than two decades. Her paintings are inspired by her love of literature and her daily walks along the Padstow, Polzeath and Port Isaac coastline, as well as the view from her studio high above the beach. Suki's work is held in private collections in the UK and worldwide.
