Russell Martin's hand-built ceramics are inspired by the rugged beauty and folklore of Cornwall, where he lives and works. Using the sgraffito technique, he carves detailed designs into the surface of his vessels, revealing contrasting layers beneath. The technique involves a meticulous drawing process that captures the delicate interplay of light and shadow, and illustrates the iconic motifs, cultural tales and pretty places of this coastal county.
Russell draws inspiration from his sketches of local people, plants and animals, letting the unique features of the Cornish landscape inform his characterful designs and visual narratives. He studied illustration at Portsmouth University and worked for many years as a children's book illustrator. In 2021 he moved to the Little Apple House in Duloe, where he works from his garden studio.
